Most "AI-powered CRM" announcements are just a chatbot stapled to a broken workflow.

ServiceNow just unveiled Otto — their governed AI push aimed at frontline workers — alongside something they're calling Autonomous CRM for Sales. The short version: AI agents that are supposed to handle repetitive sales tasks, surface the right customer data at the right time, and reduce how much manual work your reps do to keep records current. It's ambitious. The "governed" framing means they're building guardrails so the AI doesn't go rogue with your customer data.

Here's the thing though. If your current CRM already fights you on basic customization, layering AI on top doesn't fix that. It accelerates the wrong thing. You end up with an AI that automates your workarounds instead of eliminating them. The ops leaders who'll actually benefit from autonomous CRM features are the ones whose underlying data and workflows are already clean — which is exactly what most mid-market teams are still trying to get right after years of platform switches and consultant projects that never quite landed.

Autonomous AI is only as good as the system it's running on top of — and most of you inherited a system nobody fully trusts.
